The Dangers of Magnesium Stearate and Stearic Acid    in Every Supplement You Take

OK, I want to run a little experiment on you.  This will take 10 seconds and will tell us if you’re body is healthy.  I don’t care where you’re at right now, even if you’re sitting in your cubicle, and people think you’re crazy for doing this, I want you to do the following:

  1. Take your right foot and start making circles in the air, circling clockwise. Make sure it is your right foot you’re using. Come on, do it!
  2. While continuing to move your right foot in a clockwise circular motion, I now want you to take your right hand and draw the number “6” in the air in front of you.

Don’t read one more sentence until you have done that, and pay attention to your right foot while doing it.

What happened to your right foot?  Did it continue as if nothing happened?  Or did it switch directions, no matter how hard you tried?

If it switched directions, you are in big trouble.  Get ready to dial 911.  Ha!  OK, not really.  This trick has nothing to do with health. Almost any person that does this trick will have their foot switch directions when they do this.  It’s the way we’re hard wired.  Even though we’re all different, we’re still hard wired the same for most things.

OK, Let’s Get Serious

Now that we’ve had a little fun, I want to talk to you about something incredibly serious.  It’s also something that is hurting just about everyone who is interested in health.

It’s probably the most serious thing I have talked about, and it infuriates me how this is allowed to continue by unscrupulous supplement makers.  It’s poisoning almost everybody that ‘thinks’ they are improving their health.

And I’d bet good money that it’s affecting you!

Those of you who are loyal readers of mine know that I’ve spoken out against a few products on the market and a handful of additives that can be dangerous if taken unknowingly, but there are few, if any, additives that deserve to be derided as much as this one. And no other is as widely used as this one.

Magnesium Stearate, sometimes called Stearic Acid, is one of those compounds that have absolutely no business being in your supplements, yet somehow manages to find its way into almost every pill you take, risking your health substantially.

If you’re taking a multi vitamin, I urge you to go grab the bottle right now and look under the “other ingredients” portion of the label and check if you see Magnesium Stearate or Stearic Acid listed.  If it’s there, you’ve been duped, and you’re paying for it with your health.

Stearic Acid is not just another unhealthy or non-working supplement. It is a dangerous, potentially toxic combination of hydrogenated oils infiltrating your body without your knowledge, building up over time and breaking down the efforts you are making to maintain your health.  It kills your cells!

Let me say that again.  It Kills your cells!

What Does The World’s Largest Online Encylopedia
Say About Stearic Acid?

Here is what Wikipedia says about Stearic Acid:

Stearic acid is useful as an ingredient in making candles, soaps, plastics, oil pastels and cosmetics, and for softening rubber. Stearic acid is used to harden soaps, particularly those made with vegetable oil.

Stearic acid is also used as a parting compound when making plaster castings from a plaster piece mold or waste mold and when making the mold from a shellacked clay original.

And here is what Wikipedia says about Magnesium Stearic:

Magnesium stearate is a major component of "bathtub rings". When produced by soap and hard water, magnesium stearate and calcium stearate both form a white solid insoluble in water, and are collectively known as scum.

Do you really want to be ingesting Stearic Acid ?!  Not me!

This Toxic Stuff Is In Almost Every Supplement

Stearic Acid is not in your supplements because it adds anything of value, or even because the supplement companies pretend it adds anything health wise. And yet, more than 90% of all supplements on the market have some form of stearic acid in them, a dangerous, completely unnecessary additive that harms you more than the nutrients in the capsule could ever help.

Stearic acid is a substance used by companies to lubricate the machinery they make your supplements on. It’s a tool to make sure they get every ounce of profit they can out of their production costs. They use these toxic, fatty oils to coat every ounce of every ingredient, making sure everything runs smoothly on old, unhealthy machines that could rightfully be changed with ease.

To add to the fact that this unnecessary ingredient is infiltrating your system, you must deal with the fact that these oils are often littered with pesticide residues, with the highest residual rate of any commercial oil. Additionally, oils are subjected to extremely high heat and within a metal catalyst for hours on end to be hydrogenated. When you alter the chemicals of any fatty acid, they stand a very good chance of becoming toxic, and with the stearates present in the metal catalyst, these lubricating oils are being loaded with toxins.

The Damage Stearic Acid Does to Your Body

It’s bad enough that every supplement you take could be weighed down with toxins in massive quantities; they are shown to reduce absorption as well. A recent Pharmaceutical Technology study showed that with a 20 minute solution, dissolution of capsules with Stearates stands at 25% while those without it are able to reach 90%. This shows a direct link to any supplement made using Stearates blocking or delaying the absorption of nutrients into your body.

In simple terms, what that means is that Stearic Acid / Magnesium Stearate was show in a clinical study to impede or block absorption, or not allow the pill to dissolve enough for you to even digest it. If you have digestive problems, it might even be close to impossible to absorb any nutrients with stearate coatings.

So you paid good money for vitamins or weight loss pills or whatever it is you are taking, and if it has stearic acid /magnesium stearate in it, there’s a good chance you won’t even digest the pill, and even if the pill does dissolve, the absorption of the ingredients in that pill are going to be altered.

Absorption is a major problem of course, but one of the side effects that really bothers me the most is how stearic acid can supress the immune system, actually slowing the formation and action of T-Cells in the body. According to a 1990 article published in Immunology Magazine, “Stearic Acid inhibits T-Cell dependent immune responses. Plasma membrane integrity is significantly impaired, leading to a loss of membrane potential and ultimately cell function and viability.”

In short, this means this is killing your cells.  Your immune system is being attacked by an ingredient used to lubricate machinery.  This is ludicrous and needs to be stopped.

I have experience this myself, having noticed that the few times in my life that I succumbed to a cold were when I was taking Stearic Acid laced supplements. Back in the day, you didn’t have a choice, as almost everything had stearic acid in it.  I always chalked my a cold to being exposed to it in the gym and over working my body.  I no longer believe that. Having cut out this toxic substance from my supplements and switching to all clean supplements, I have not been sick since. I think the evidence speaks for itself.

Even Our Government Says This Is Bad Stuff

Even the US Government has labeled Magnesium Stearate as a Hazardous Substance, requiring any company that manufactures and transports it to file a Material Safety Data Sheet. Just take a look at what the uses are listed as for the chemical in those Data Sheets:

  • Ammunition
  • Dusting Powder
  • Paint and Varnish Drier
  • Binder
  • Emulsifier

In the section that lists Human Health Data, the Data Sheet states that Stearates may “irritate the respiratory tract” when inhaled and that “Acute ingestion may cause gastroenteritis.” It can cause lung and digestive problems, that easily.

The listing goes on to state that “This Product is hazardous under the criteria of the Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard”. It’s not just a bad additive for your supplements, it’s a toxin and it has been shown and duly documented to cause severe health problems.

Do They Really Believe This Is Safe ?

The companies using these stearates will go out of their way to tell you it is okay to ingest them. They tell you that Magnesium Stearate is just a safe form of magnesium. They say that it is a salt of stearic acid and that it is used in supplements all the time safely. To be honest, I think these companies just don’t know any better.  They have been told it is safe for so long that they will defend that stance no matter what, now.

But let me give you an example.  At the time of this writing, gas prices here in the USA are approaching $5 per gallon.  If next week gas prices were suddenly to drop to $3 per gallon, people would be dancing in the streets with joy.  However, at $3 per gallon, that is still twice as high as we were paying just a few years ago.  However, we have been programmed that $5 per gallon is normal, and anything less is a great deal.  We have been brain washed to an extent.  That’s the same thing that is happening to these supplement companies. I believe that they truly believe there’s nothing wrong with using these toxic ingredients, because that is all they have known.  However, new studies show that is no longer the case.

We need to get this crap out of our supplements!  If you ask most manufacturers, they will probably tell you that small amounts of this substance are supposed to be harmless, but why would you want to ingest anything that is toxic, no matter how small the dosages? The only reason these substances exist is to make the machinery move faster so these companies can make more money. It is illogical.

What Do Doctors, Labs & Manufacturers Say
About Magnesium Stearate / Stearic Acid ?

How safe can a product be containing ingredients that do this?  Let’s hear from some published medical reviews:

“The addition of palmitate or stearate to cultured cells led to activation of a death program with a morphology resembling that of apoptosis. Palmitates and stearates caused cardiac and other types of cells to undergo programmed cell death.”
– Sparagna, GC, Hickson-Bick, DL, Department of Pathology and Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. American Journal of Medical Science, Jul 1999; pg. 15-21.

“ When cells were exposed to stearic acids and palmitic acids, there was a dramatic loss of cell viability after 24 hours. Cell death was induced by stearic and palmitic acid.”
-- PMID: 12562519 (PubMed) Ulloth, JE, Casiano CA, De Leon M. Department of Microbiology and Immunology, East Carolina University School of Medicine.

“Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Calcium Stearate, Palmitate, and Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils are lubricants which enable manufacturing equipment to run more efficiently but inhibit eventual dissolution of the nutrient. Stearic acid may prevent absorption by individuals with compromised digestive systems. Magnesium stearate and stearic acid also present the problem that delivery of the active ingredient may be considerably further down the intestinal tract than the site originally intended. This may result in the nutrient being delivered away from its optimal absorption site. Not only can this impede absorption, in some cases it might be harmful to the liver.”

Did Those Facts Convince You ?
Stearic Acid / Magnesium Stearate Kills Cell

For goodness sake, one of the material safety data sheets on Stearic Acid doesn’t even want you getting it on your skin!

With Magnesium Stearate/Stearic Acid actually working to kill your cells, how can a company responsibly say that they are harmless in small doses? They are knowingly handing out toxic capsules and expecting you to ignore the evidence.

How Much Stearic Acid Do You Ingest Every Day?

These supplement manufacturers may say that you are getting a safe amount, and if you were only to take one pill a week they might be right, but no one takes only one pill a week. Just think about it. Most capsules/pills have as much as 50 mg of Magnesium Stearate and/or Stearic Acid in them. If you take 6 of these capsules each day, a number well below what some people ingest, you are getting 180 capsules each month, more than 9000 mg a month. Add that up and you are getting more than 4 and a half ounces of stearic acid every year. A quarter cup of poison.  Mmmm, sounds good.

Some people ingest much more and its all toxic, depressing your immune system, lowering your absorption, and harming your lungs and digestive tract. And that is just the short term effects.  Who knows what kind of long term disasters await you, health wise.

Stearic Acid Should Be Avoided Like The Plague

You should never, ever use any product that has stearic acid or magnesium stearate in it. If you do, you’re risking your health for no reason. You’re playing right into the hands of the greedy supplement companies who think they can mistreat their customers and load you full of toxins. You’re spending money on a product that will quite possibly make you sick.

Stearic acid isn’t necessary to make supplements any more; it is only used to lubricate machinery and make more capsules. Any reputable company with even the smallest sliver of care and respect for its customers would never go near Stearic Acid, instead using a GMP certified facility to produce their products and demanding natural forms of lubricants that pose no health risks to the consumer. Some factories can’t even make supplements without using these toxins. The excuses pile up and they continue to load you down with these poisonous byproducts that eat away at your body.

Never settle for an excuse and never put this garbage in your bodies. Never, ever, EVER!

Let’s Look And See If You’re Being Poisoned Right Now

Do me a favor
.  You already did the foot and hand trick.  That was for fun and giggle.  Now we’re talking about your health…your life.  Go to the cupboard and look at every pill bottle you own. Look down at the part that says “Other Ingredients.”  If it says Stearic Acid or Magnesium Stearate on the bottle, throw it out. Any small bit of good you get from those bottles is being negated and dragged through the mud by low absorption, reduced immune system activity, and a whole slew of toxic side effects you might not see for months or even years to come.

Besides, with your supplements loaded up with Stearic Acid, good luck having them dissolve and absorbed by your body. No matter what you paid, chances are you just paid to make your poop more expensive.

Seriously, throw them out today.

Sincerely,

Caroline Cardenas
