| What is Hoodia Gordonii? |
Hoodia Gordonii is the official scientific botanical name for a species of succulent plant that grows only in the semi-arid regions of the Kalarahi Desert in South Africa. While there are over a dozen species of Hoodia plants, only one, Hoodia Gordonii has been shown to have merit with weight loss.
Attempts to farm the species Hoodia gordonii outside its normal habitat have typically been unsuccessful. Hoodia plants are incredibly difficult to grow, requiring a lot of care and attention to their watering, sunlight exposure, and precise seasonal temperatures.
The plant, known for its lack of leaves and spiky appearance, has been used by the local inhabitants of the region – the San Bushmen – to keep from feeling the pangs of hunger and thirst while on long hunts in the desert. These tribesmen, who call the plant "Ghaap" or sometimes “Khobab” or “Khoi,” have been using the plant for hundreds of years to preserve their closely held tradition to return to the tribe with the entire hunt, not eating any of it along the way. Only Hoodia Gordonii can waylay these hunger pangs long enough for them to do so.
Recently discovered by scientists, Hoodia Gordonii has enormous implications as an appetite suppressant and weight loss supplement because of its chemical makeup. Having researched the plant for many years, these scientists have uncovered and pinpointed the P57 Compound, a chemical extract found only in this species of Hoodia plant that has been proven 100% safe and effective in stalling the process that signals hunger in the human body.
Unlike other chemical and natural substances that have performed similarly in the weight loss industry, Hoodia Gordonii contains no stimulants and acts directly on the brain’s hunger receptors, ensuring the negative side effects and anxiety that result because of the use of stimulants does not occur. |

| Hoodia Gordonii – The Truth about 10:1 and 20:1 Hoodia Ratios |
You’ve likely run across Hoodia products that claim 10:1 or 20:1 concentrations. Depending on which site you go to, this is either a bad or a really good thing. How can it be both? Read on.
The 20:1 Ratio Gimmick
The most common ratio you’ll see when you look on the ingredients label of many Hoodia products is that they claim a 20 to 1 ratio (usually shown as 20:1) of concentrated Hoodia. Some companies even go as far as to say their Hoodia is 20X more potent or powerful. This is complete nonsense, and you should think twice before trusting a company that tries to make such outlandish claims.
These companies claim that it takes 20 kg of Hoodia to make just 1 kg of super powerful Hoodia Gordonii. Hence the 20 to 1 ratio.
Here’s how it goes: In these cases, the 20:1 ratio actually refers to the ratio of fresh raw Hoodia Gordonii it takes to produce dried Hoodia that is grinded up, ready for use in capsules. Essentially, the 20:1 ratio simply means it takes a lot of raw, water filled Hoodia cactus to create a small amount of dry, ready to use Hoodia Gordonii.
As anybody can clearly see, this has absolutely nothing to do with potency or effectiveness of the Hoodia. Everybody should realize that every naturally occurring product will have a similar ratio when dried. When moisture is removed from something, it loses weight – a lot of weight. However, the exact same nutrients and active ingredients are still present in that 1 kilogram that originated from the fully moisture saturated 20 kilograms. (It’s almost like beef jerky.) Nothing has changed – the concentration is not greater, nor is the supplement any more powerful.
Still, some companies try to fool their customers into thinking that a 20:1 ratio is more powerful than their competitors. We all have 20:1 or similar wet to dry ratios. Simply put, honest companies don’t try to use word or ratio tactics to trick customers.
The 10:1 Ratio – It Gets Worse
Many times, a product will use the 10:1 ratio to label their product in an attempt to make their product appear more potent when, in reality, the product is actually much less potent.
A common practice among Hoodia Gordonii manufacturers in recent years has been to use the much cheaper, much more freely available Chinese Hoodia to make their supplements. They mix 1 part South African Hoodia and 10 parts Chinese Hoodia. Because they have a small amount of South African hoodia in their capsules, they can claim that it contains South African Hoodia.
They usually slap a 10:1 Hoodia Concentration label and play off this 10:1 ratio to make it sound like it is 10X more powerful than other Hoodia products when in fact most of the formula may be ineffective or not even real Hoodia Gordonii. With over 20 different species of Hoodia, only Hoodia Gordonii has the appetite suppressant chemical in it, and Chinese Hoodia may consist of different species of Hoodia that have no appetite suppressing ability.
Most Chinese Hoodia hitting the markets are being tested, and show they do not contain the active ingredient that supports appetite suppression, and they are produced in factories that do not comply with the same quality standards that we expect of our supplements.
So don’t let these 10:1 or 20:1 claims fool you. If a company is using that as their marketing gimmick, many suggest you should look elsewhere. |

| How Hoodia Gordonii Works |
Hoodia Gordonii has been shown to work as an appetite suppressant by accessing the part of the brain that controls hunger. The hypothalamus receives this signal and believes that food has been received, causing it to turn off its hunger receptors and allows you to continue without combating the incessant thoughts of food that plague you day in and day out. The chemicals in Hoodia in effect fool your brain into thinking you are no longer hungry. |
|
| What is All the Hoopla? |
In recent years, Hoodia has received a vast amount of attention in the media as its potential for weight loss has been studied.
News organizations across the country have run reports about its unique properties and even 60 Minutes, the seminal news magazine on CBS ran a primetime report in which anchor Leslie Stahl visited South Africa and tried the Hoodia Gordonii plant with local tribesmen. Her report concluded that “Hoodia doesn't stimulate at all."
Scientists say it fools the brain by making you think you’re full, even if you've eaten just a morsel.” Her experience was positive and dozens more have continued to tout its results, including scientists who have spent much of the last five years studying the effects Hoodia Gordonii has.
One such study, conducted at Brown University Medical School in 2004 used Zucker Rats, specially bred rats that are prone to obesity and diabetes, to test Hoodia Gordonii and found that they too lost weight and even reversed diabetic symptoms in some cases.

| Hoodia Authenticity |
With the rise in Hoodia Gordonii’s popularity, there has been an extensive increase in the number of companies who mislead their customers by selling non-African strains of the plant or altered formulations.
Real South African Hoodia Gordonii takes as much as 7 years to mature and cultivate and is extremely rare.
In recent years, it has come under the protection of the United Nations and the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) initiative.
This means that all Hoodia Gordonii that is pure and legally grown is strictly regulated for export to the United States by the government of South Africa and the United Nations. CITES is recognized by all UN countries as an agreement to protect wildlife and plants that are endangered and that makes it highly illegal to import or export anything that is not properly certified.
Any Hoodia Gordonii product sold without providing the necessary testing certification to prove they are authentic should be highly scrutinized. All buyers should be highly aware of the risk of being mislead by these products. |
|
| Beware of Suspicious Hoodia Gordonii Products! |
While CITES certification is required to know that your Hoodia Gordonii was legally harvested and imported, it is also necessary to ensure that the CITES documentation was properly obtained and that the Hoodia that was certified remains pure when it is placed into a supplement.
More than 100 separate complaints against companies were filed last year in relation to Hoodia Gordonii because of false claims and improperly tested product, often the result of carefully reworded labeling or sometimes just outright lies. This is why Hoodia Prime™ triple tests it’s Hoodia before it goes out to our customers.
There are supposed to be versions of Hoodia Gordonii that are grown in China or even in the United States, but it is believed by many to be a different species of Hoodia that does not provide the appetite suppression of the Hoodia Gordonii grown in South Africa.
In fact, there are over 20 species of Hoodia that grow in South Africa alone, and only Hoodia “Gordonii” is the species of the plant that has the P57 molecule for appetite suppression. The other versions of Hoodia do not. So if you see a product that just states “Hoodia” on the label and not specifically “Hoodia Gordonii”, be aware you may be purchasing a worthless product for weight loss.
To make matter worse, the high demand for Hoodia has caused farmers to use Hoodia Gordonii plants which haven’t yet matured. These immature plants contain little if any of the P57 molecule which is the portion of Hoodia that gives the fantastic appetite suppression effect. So while cultivating young plants could technically be pure Hoodia, they could be useless for appetite suppression.
Pure Hoodia Gordonii will often cost as much as $300 per kilogram and that means that any cheap Hoodia that claims to contain very high concentrations of the supplement may be misleading, perhaps finding ways to get around their CITES certification by falsely claiming they have somehow concentrated down your doses, or one of many popular methods of duping the public. They may not only be lying; they may have included other ingredients and fillers to dilute the overall formula, posing potential health risks and costing you additional money. |
|
| Assuring Authenticity |
The only way to be sure that your Hoodia Gordonii is 100% authentic and grown in South Africa is to ensure that it has up to date CITES certification and that it has been tested by an approved independent testing source and that you can access and review both the CITES certification and the testing results for the product you are buying.
Any claims made by a company contrary to these conditions should be red lights that your Hoodia Gordonii is not 100% pure and that it may not work as it is supposed to in suppressing your appetite and helping you lose weight. |

| Hoodia Prime Review - Jane R. |
| Hoodia Prime Did Exactly What It Was Supposed To |
| Hoodia Prime is working great! It is amazing how I just don't think about food - but still seem to eat healthy. It has really transformed my relationship with food to a healthy one. I'm not terribly overweight so a photo isn't going to show much with me but I do love the product! |

Loves Hoodia |

Listen to what BBC News Correspondent Tom Mangold reported on BBC News after taking Hoodia Gordonii:
“Imagine this: an organic pill that kills the appetite and attacks obesity. It has no known side-effects, and contains a molecule that fools your brain into believing you are full… (I tried some).
Soon after, we began the four hour drive back to Capetown. The plant is said to have a feel-good almost aphrodisiac quality, and I have to say, we felt good. But more significantly, we did not even think about food. Our brains really were telling us we were full. It was a magnificent deception.
Dinner time came and went. We reached our hotel at about midnight and went to bed without food. And the next day, neither of us wanted nor ate breakfast.” – Tom Mangold, Correspondent BBC News. |

60 Minutes Shows Why
This Works |
 |
This is what reporter Leslie Stahl from CBS news said on 60 Minutes when asked about Hoodia Gordonii:
Stahl says she had no after effects – no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. She also wasn't hungry all day, even when she would normally have a pang around mealtime. And, she also had no desire to eat or drink the entire day! |
